Granada Cathedral

Granada Cathedral is the great Renaissance church of the lower city, built on the site of the main mosque after the Reconquista, with the Royal Chapel beside it holding the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs. It is an easy, central counterpoint to a day on the Alhambra hill. This guide covers what to see, how the cathedral and chapel differ, and how to fit them around your palace ticket.

A cathedral built on a mosque

When Granada fell in 1492, the new rulers raised a cathedral on the footprint of the former great mosque, in the heart of the medieval city. The result is a luminous Renaissance interior of soaring white piers and a domed main chapel that floods with light, very different in feel from the carved intimacy of the Nazaries Palaces. The huge organs, the gilded retable and the rounded ambulatory all reward a slow circuit.

The Royal Chapel and the Catholic Monarchs

Tucked against the cathedral is the Capilla Real, the Royal Chapel, a separate ticket and arguably the more moving visit. Here lie the tombs of Isabella and Ferdinand, the monarchs who completed the Reconquista and funded Columbus, alongside their daughter Juana and her husband. The carved marble effigies, the wrought iron screen and the sacristy treasures, including Isabella crown and scepter, make this one of the most historically charged rooms in Spain.

How it fits a Granada day

The cathedral and chapel sit in the busy center, a short walk from Plaza Nueva and surrounded by the lanes of the Alcaiceria, the old silk bazaar now full of souvenir stalls. It is the ideal stop for the half of the day you are not on the Alhambra hill, or for the morning of a later palace slot. From here it is an easy climb up into the Albayzin for sunset. Practical notes

The cathedral and the Royal Chapel charge separate, modest entry fees and keep their own hours, with limited access during services. Photography rules are stricter in the Royal Chapel, where the tombs are. Both are central and need no advance slot, so they are a reliable backup if your Alhambra timing leaves a gap.
