Why the Mirador de San Nicolas is special

From this small terrace at the top of the Albayzin, the entire Alhambra lines up on the opposite hill with the snow-capped Sierra Nevada behind it. It is the view on every Granada postcard, and at sunset the Nasrid walls turn gold. The square itself, in front of the church of San Nicolas, is humble, but the panorama is the best in the city.

How to get there

  • On foot: 20 to 30 minutes uphill from Plaza Nueva through the Albayzin lanes. Steep and cobbled, wear good shoes.
  • By minibus: The C31 and C32 lines climb from Plaza Nueva to the top of the Albayzin. Cheap and easy on the legs.
  • By taxi: A taxi can get you close, but the final stretch to the square is pedestrian.

Best time for sunset

Arrive about 45 minutes before sunset to get a place at the wall. In June and July the sun sets around 21:30 to 22:00, in winter closer to 18:30. Weekends and summer evenings are crowded with street musicians and travelers, which is part of the atmosphere. For a quieter version, come at sunrise instead.

Make a half-day of it

The mirador pairs naturally with a wander through the Albayzin and on to Sacromonte. A guided Albayzin and Sacromonte walking tour from 29 EUR threads the viewpoints together and explains the Moorish history along the way. Fit it into a wider plan with our 1, 2 or 3 day Granada guide, and if you have a spare day, add the Setenil de las Bodegas trip.

Practical tips

  • Bring a light layer, the terrace catches the breeze after dark.
  • Keep valuables close in the sunset crowd.
  • Photographers, a small tripod helps once the light drops, but expect people in frame.
  • Grab a drink at a nearby bar and stay for the blue hour after sunset.
